The Department of Botany was established in the year 1959 and started offering regular M.Sc. course under the stewardship of Dr.I.M.Rao, the founder Professor and Head of the Department Prof.V.S.Ramdas, FNA made a pioneering contribution to the growth of the Department. The Department has made indelible mark of excellence in research in the area of Plant Physiology. Several major research projects funded by International Scientific agencies like UNEP, USDA, IAEA, IFS etc and National Scientific organizations such as DST, UOC, CSIR, DAE, DNES etc., were completed by this Department and this Department was recognized as one of the international centers of photosynthesis research under UNEP programme. Some of the past and present faculty members have received prestigious National and International awards and some got elected for distinguished fellowships such as ENA for the first time from this University.
The Department has so far produced 140 M.Phils and 120 Ph.Ds and currently 18 students are working for M.Phil/Ph.D. This Department along with publishing 30 books and 650 research paper has completed fifty research projects and twenty conferences/seminars/workshops.
